8 Simple Ways to Make Your Home Cozy This Fall

The crisp morning air, the smell of pumpkins and spice, and the fiery color of changing leaves means that is it finally fall! The autumn brings with it the start of school, along with many fun activities and traditions, but it is also a great time to make your home extra cozy in preparation for the cold months ahead.

A seasonal change in home décor accompanies our changing schedules and mindsets, making our homes feel like a cozy retreat. All it takes is a free afternoon and a few simple changes to bring our homes from easy, breezy summer to comfy and cozy fall.

Color Scheme

A good rule of thumb for making your home feel cozy for fall is to work within your home’s general color scheme but add décor that is a few shades darker. If you are struggling with mixing and matching colors, you can always use with neutrals like white, taupe, or charcoal to fill in the gaps, as needed.

Front Door Fall Décor

Start the cozy home vibes at the front door by switching out your wreath and doormat. You can even layer a smaller doormat over an accent rug for added color and pattern. Then, finish off your new front door look by adding seasonal flowers and decorations for Halloween or Thanksgiving.

Change Up Your Throw Pillows

Take stock of your throw pillows and add in some heavily textured ones, like chunky knit, faux fur, velvet or sheepskin to increase your home’s cozy factor. You can also try adding a few that are a couple of shades darker in color compared to your summer pillows.

Add Cozy Textures

When making your home extra cozy for fall, you can’t forget those warm comfy blankets and throws. Not only do they make your sofa look extra inviting, but they are also important functionally to help keep you warm on those cold nights.

Switch Out Artwork

Fall is a great time to review your art collections and family photo galleries. Maybe you need to update your gallery with your most recent family photos, or you can change out artwork to keep things feeling fresh and interesting.

Add Fall Florals

It’s time to pack up those lively green stems and beautiful summer florals, and bring the outside in with colorful fall stems. These can be vibrant or muted in color, depending on the overall style and color scheme you have chosen for your home.

Don’t Forget the Scent

Undoubtedly, one of the things I most look forward to with fall is the rich and comforting scent. To make your home feel extra cozy for fall, add some candles (especially scented candles!) By including scented candles in your seasonal home décor, you can engage all of your senses creating a memorable and cozy home experience.

Trade Out Your Rug

Lastly, consider switching out your summer area rug for one that is darker in color. Not only will this move increase your home’s cozy vibes, but it will also help to hide any mud that accidentally gets tracked in after soccer practice or raking leaves.
