How to Declutter Your Home in 7 Easy Steps

I don’t know about you, but we have been busy spring cleaning around my house. I just love the feeling I get after everything has been cleaned and decluttered as I stand back and admire my freshly organized home.

But getting to that point?

It’s not always easy to get motivated to start that daunting task.

So, we compiled a few tips to make decluttering and reorganizing your home easy breezy and stress-free.

Make it manageable with a list of projects

When faced with cleaning out and reorganizing multiple spaces or rooms in your home, the task can quickly become overwhelming.

So rather than put it off until “later,” start by writing a list of the areas within each room that you want to declutter and organize.

Breaking it down into smaller more manageable tasks makes getting started easier, and helps to keep you motivated because you can see progress quicker!

Pull everything out

Start by emptying the shelf, cabinet, drawer or closet. Once you have everything out, it will be easier to understand the scope of what you have and sort it into piles. (This is a great time to have the kids help, because it doesn’t matter if things get a bit messy.)

Time to get honest

Sorting through everything can be a bit difficult because we all get nostalgic, but this is also the time to be brutally honest with yourself. Focus on the tough questions: Does it serve a purpose? Have I used it in a year?

Decluttering doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to get rid of everything, though. Grant yourself some grace and if you come across something of deep sentimental value to you, keep it. But consider whether it may serve you better on display somewhere in your home, so that you can be reminded of your cherished object often.

Clean

Take this time, when you have everything out, to clean some of those hard to reach areas that may not be included in your weekly routine.

Organize what you are keeping

Now that you have everything sorted, set aside everything you are not keeping and focus on the stuff you plan to keep. Decide how to organize in a way that makes the most sense to you. It could be based on function like in a kitchen cabinet, size or color like when styling shelves, by season for clothing, or in any way that makes sense to you and how you use your space.

Decide what to do with the rest…donate? sell? garbage?

Now that you have everything decluttered, cleaning and organized, let’s turn our focus back to that pile of stuff you don’t plan on keeping. If you haven’t already, it’s time to further sort through that pile and decide what you can throw away, donate and potentially sell.

Enjoy your freshly cleaned and organized space

Ah, now that’s the stuff! It’s time to sit back and relax after all that hard work. Decluttering and organizing your home can be easy and stress-free (okay, maybe a little stressful) but that wasn’t too bad, now was it?
